A Memorable African Safari Adrift A Hot Air Balloon With Excellent Views Of The Savanah Teeming With Wildlife.

 

An African safari is not complete devoid of taking a ride on a hot air-driven balloon.

In 1976, Alan Root and his spouse Joan- wildlife film makers, rode in a hot air balloon to shoot movie clips of wild animals. It was much easier, to use the balloon to discover places where an auto could not access, to film lovely aerials of wildlife.

From then on, the idea drew the curiosity of visitors who were ready to spend top-dollar for this once in a lifetime adventure. This gave birth to balloon safaris in Kenya Tanzania safaris.

Its daybreak in the Masai Mara. The blanket of darkness is quite intense on the morning and makes the red orange fire from the burner of the hot-air balloon beam vividly bright.

As the sun emerges from behind the mountains, the 100-foot tall balloon is afloat across the Masai Mara plains with every one of us lodged in a weaved basket installed on the massive balloon.

Simply put, it's captivating! The airstreams bear us out of track, above the periphery of the Ngama hills and along towards the Talek River. Directly below, a couple of gray-back Jackals scamper haphazardly in the midst of the shrubs and a hare flits to its underground hideaway.

Adrift, we have a superior eagle's eye view of the expanse of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti Parks extending as far as the eye can perceive. It seems infinite.

We take 90 degrees turn and underneath we spot the heads of giraffes through the cover of acacia trees as they nibble the leaves, scarcely noticing us moving in the air above.

After approximately one hour adrift, the journey ends with a bouncy landing bringing us back to the ground. Next we crawl out of the basket to a champagne breakfast. The charm is that this breakfast happens in the wild, wherever you land, and it's prepared as you see with the burners that a short while before held you suspended in the air. What a way to start our morning safari!

"Over the years, there has been betterment in hot air balloon technological innovation. The furnaces are more efficient and less noisy than the previous balloon safaris" explains the captain.

"One thing that surprises most first-time balloonists is the absolute stillness, the peace as you float above the savanah, the woodland and the rivers of the Masai Mara. The sounds beneath drift clearly upwards: a lion's bellow, elephants crashing through the bush, baboons perched on the tops of the trees. If you're fortunate you will surge high above for the view of a life-time. " the captain offers.

After the end year rains, the vegetation is lush green as we drive back to our camp viewing wildlife en-route. It is contrasting as these are the same plains which, in November, were golden, dried up and hash.

Suddenly we encounter a mother cheetah marking her tree, spraying the area with urine. Finished, she checks our group and then makes a soft tweeting sound as she walks through the grass. Very likely she is looking for her litter.

The plains are packed with elephants, buffaloes, topi, wildebeests and other antelopes and the scene is just great.
